Multi Position Rotary Actuators

Multi-position actuators motion symbol. Used for 3-position, 4-position, and 5-position actuators.

Multi-position actuators provide back and forth rotation between three, four, or five positions in any sequence. All Rotomation multi-position actuators feature black-anodized aluminum bodies, one-piece heat-treated alloy steel pinion shafts, ball bearings, and stainless steel or black-oxide alloy steel hardware. The three-position version is the most common requirement but four and five-position units provide additional flexibility and designed with value in mind, based on the same basic assembly. They are designed to use one cylinder at a time (per position) to provide the propelling force, therefore they generate the same amount of torque as our single-rack rotary actuators. The compact A032 rotary actuator also comes in its 3-position version.

Common Options: adjustable rotation (for end positions only), various shafts and keyway orientation, bumpers (for end positions only), magnetic switches for feedback of any or all positions, and various port locations.

Three Position Actuators Three Position Actuators

Rotomation's 3-position actuators look very much like our standard dual rack rotary actuators on the outside but they provide 3 "stops" or positions that can be accessed in any sequence from any position. They are designed to use internal stops to provide the additional middle stop. All common options above are available and some also have cushions (for end positions only), washdown protection, and metric shafts sizes. Standard and special rotations up to 1,080° total (from utmost clockwise position to utmost counterclockwise position), except for the A032 3-position actuator which is limited to four available position configurations. Once the center or reference position (RP) is determined, the other two positions (one clockwise, one counterclockwise) are specified relative to the RP.

Four & Five Position Actuators Four & Five Position Actuators

Rotomation's 4 and 5-position actuators are built similarly to our 3-position actuators but they have additional auxiliary cylinders used to provide the additional internal stops/positions. Four-position actuators have 1 pair of additional auxiliary cylinders on the right side of the unit and five-position actuators have 2 pairs, attached to the ends of the main cylinders using a control end cap that allows pressurization and venting of main cylinders. These actuators require a more elaborate operational logic and additional directional valves to drive to all the different positions available. Standard and special rotations up to 1,080° total (adding up all position angles). Once the reference position (RP) is determined, all other positions are specified relative to the RP.
